Jay Z’s goal of becoming an official agent just became reality. The rap mogul received his license to be a player agent in the NBA and MLB through Roc Nation Sports. Now Jay-Z can continue his pursuit of the best athletes in sports.
He’s already signed New York Yankees star second baseman Robinson Cano, New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, and Notre Dame women’s basketball player Skylar Diggins. Jay-Z is also expected to sign New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and a deal is reportedly close.
The deal with Smith is on hold with the NFL meeting to discuss the legality of Jay-Z’s recruitment of the former West Virginia star because of the so called “runner rule”. The rule is if an agent isn’t yet certified, they can’t recruit players. Jay-Z has yet to be certified in the NFL and got Geno on board. The results of the NFL’s meeting haven’t been released.
NBA superstar Kevin Durant looks like he will be Roc Nation’s first NBA client. Not too shabby. Jay-Z is reportedly Durant’s idol, and wants to team up with him. Durant also wants to improve his branding and believes Jay-Z is the perfect person to do that.
There looks to be no end in sight for how far Jay-Z can take himself being an agent. He’s already locked up one of the best players in the NBA, one of the best players in the MLB, and is well on his way to building an empire sports agency.
