Ted Wells Report: Richie Incognito Bullied Jonathan Martin

14 Feb

The long-awaited results of Ted Well’s investigation into the Richie Incognito Jonathan Martin saga are in.

According to the report, Incognito, along with fellow offensive lineman John Jerry and Mike Pouncey “Engaged in a pattern of harassment directed at not only Martin, but also another young Dolphins offensive lineman….Martin was taunted on a persistent basis with sexually explicit remarks about his sister and his mother and at times ridiculed with racial insults and other offensive comments…We ultimately concluded that Martin was indeed harassed by Incognito, who can fairly be described as the main instigator, and by Jerry and Pouncey, who tended to follow Incognito’s lead.”

You can see the full report here.

Martin’s agent Kenneth Zuckerman praised the report.

“He (Jonathan Martin) feels a great sense of relief. Jonathan Martin is a great man and he’s only shown me that he is very honest since the day I met him. He loves football and is eager to get back on the field, regardless of what team he plays for,” Zuckerman said.

Richie Incognito’s lawyer Mark Schamel on the other hand wasn’t as kind.

“Mr. Wells’ NFL report is replete with errors,” Schamel said. “The facts do not support a conclusion that Jonathan Martin’s mental health, drug use, or on field performance issues were related to the treatment by his teammates. It is disappointing that Mr. Wells would have gotten it so wrong, but not surprising. The truth, as reported by the Dolphins players and as shown by the evidence, is that Jonathan Martin was never bullied by Richie Incognito or any member of the Dolphins Offensive line.”

Martin originally left the Dolphins on October 28th to undergo counseling for emotional issues. At the time Martin said leaving had to do with the Dolphins locker-room culture.

Another wrinkle that came from the report was that Dolphins head coach “Joe Philbin was not aware of the mistreatment of Martin”. Still, it is concerning that Philbin did not have a full grasp of what was going on his Miami’s locker room.

Martin and Incognito’s future in the National Football League remain unclear at this time. Incognito’s future though definitely took a major hit with today’s news.
