Everything was going according to plan for the Giants. The team wrapped up the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs after Week 16 and then beat the Redskins who had everything on the line in Week 17.
Momentum appeared to be on the Giants’ side. That is until Odell Beckham Jr. and a few other Giants decided to go an a Miami excursion hours after being victorious over Washington.
OBJ and his teammates partied with Justin Bieber at the Fontainebleau in South Beach and were seen in a now infamous photograph the next day shirtless on a boat.
OBJ and Eli Manning led the charge in dismissing the trip as being any sort of distraction and made it clear the Giants would undoubtedly be ready at 4:40pm on Sunday afternoon in Lambeau Field against the Packers.
The only problem for the Giants against the Packers was they looked far from ready. OBJ had what could probably be the worst game he’s ever had as an NFL player. He dropped three passes on seven catchable targets including a potential touchdown, according to ProFootballTalk and finished the game with just four catches for 28 yards. OBJ’s 28 yards receiving were his second-lowest total since his rookie year.
The second that photo of OBJ shirtless on a boat became public, he created a bull’s eye target on himself to get the job done and he utterly failed.
OBJ was adamant after the game that there’s no way going to Miami had anything to do with his sub par postseason performance saying, “At the end of the day, I went through practice, had zero drops, zero missed assignments — there was nothing to connect seven days ago to [Sunday’s game] and how we played and executed. There is just nothing in the world. It’s just not realistic.”
Fair or not fair, the Miami trip does make you question if OBJ was as focused as he should have been for the Packers and maybe if he were more focused, the Giants’ chances of winning would have risen.
There’s no way to prove that, but with how poorly he played and with how badly the Giants looked, that conversation is now legitimate.
